The band that I was featuring Sunday night, June 22nd, is called "Grupo Folklorico Experimental y Nuevayorquino". A group of major musicians who assembled their talents in New York in the mid-1970s and created 2 historical recordings before breaking up and going their own ways to pursue their respective careers. They will be performing as part of the Smithsonian Folklife Festival on Saturday June 28, 2008 at 6pm. It will take place at the Opry House tent right behind the Smithsonian castle.
A partial list of the musicians who will be performing are:
Andy Gonzalez - bass player and co-founder of Conjunto Libre
Manny Oquendo - timbale player and co-founder of Conjunto Libre (formerly with Eddie Palmieri's original La Perfecta)
Eddie Zervigon - flute player and founding member of Orquesta Broadway
Nelson Gonzalez - tres guitar (has worked with: Tipica 73, Cachao, Marc Anthony, Son Mondano, currently on tour with Celia Cruz-The Musical)
Reinaldo Jorge - trombone (member of Fania All Stars, has worked with Orquesta Broadway and Eddie Palmieri's La Perfecta II)
DC is in for a real treat. I hope to see you there.
